The formulaic puzzle. The universal synergy. What does it look like when people–with all their weird quirks and edges–come together to form a greater culture? Are broken tesselations less beautiful because of their overlapping patterns and unpredictability, or does that make them more captivating? Where do you see compatibility in the people around you? In nature? Philosophy?

What does “tessellate” mean to you?

Tessellations are a form of art, but art needs science just as much as science needs art. Tesselations are both art and geometry. We chose this as our debut theme because this is the embodiment of our magazine—the merging of science and art.

Editor’s Note

Here, the universe spins with us. We see the geometry it is built from—the overlapping waves and their functions, glittering with stardust. I know quite a lot of us disliked science and math in our childhoods, and some of us still do (no judgment there!) but perhaps, it could be only because we have never before noticed the art behind each and every equation.

A tessellation is an artwork consisting of geometric patterns. To us, it symbolizes the merging of the definitive and the abstract, and what better theme for our inaugural issue? In Issue 1: Tessellate, you will find pieces that question and pieces that define art in a galactic, psychological, and biological sense. Pieces that shrapnel into scars.

Each of these pieces have been pondered on, and leave an evocative, burning aftertaste. I am amazed by all of our contributors, and I know I will continue to inspire myself with their writing.

Working together to create Issue 1 was honestly exhilarating, and I truly value all the pieces to this tessellation. I would like to thank the entire Blue Flame Review Staff for not only agreeing to go along with my fledgling idea months ago, but also for showing commitment and passion throughout this journey.

I would also like to thank Jenna William for her mesmerizing cover art; I am infinitely grateful. Please take a moment to follow her on Twitter @Artbyjenna1 and appreciate her gorgeous work!

And lastly, I would like to thank you, reader. For supporting us and for appreciating the art we wish to preserve. For the most wholesome experience, I suggest not only reading these pieces, but living and breathing them. Understanding the mechanisms and science behind them, the science behind us.

Warmly,
